The HAP was created to provide young people with quality training and positive experiences in the performing arts. We are open to all students, ages 9 - 24, whether homeschooled or from area organized schools. Our emphasis is on providing a wholesome, faith-filled experience for each participant. Woven into our rehearsals are times of Christian worship and learning nuggets of Biblical truth as we train to become consummate performers, bringing joy, salt and light to our audiences.
Our philosophy of training and performance is counter-culture and centered on cooperation and esteem for each member of the group. Our emphasis is that no member is more important than the others; we are all valuable to the project based upon our gifts and talents, of which, each person has many, though some may be, as yet, undiscovered.
Our methods of training young people in theatre are based upon various methods developed by Lenka
Peterson and Dan O'Connor. Their groups, such as the Westchester Young
Actors' Theater, were praised by professionals like Paul Newman
and developed performers such as Glynnis O'Connor in a cooperative,
creative atmosphere.
Our acting theory classes are based upon the teachings of Uta Hagen, among other theatre greats.
How Our Christianity Affects Our Organization and Projects Our Christian faith is based upon a widespread literal interpretation of the Holy Bible represented in printed versions such as the King James Version, the New International Version and other similar versions.
This means will do our very best at being 100% honest, loving and helpful. We pick wholesome arts projects that do not promote sexuality, harsh language and personal violence. Some projects such as the play "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" depict battle fighting, pitting the forces of evil against the forces of good, or Aslan willingly laying down his life. We believe this type of violence has merit in the context of the drama and do our best to portray it in a sensitive manner.
For Our Christian Friends Our Christianity means that for our Christian friends we produce projects that teach Christ according to the scriptures and attempt to develop a deeper Christian walk in the young people participating in our projects. It also means that by many of our projects we seek to deliver the Gospel message to a wide audience.
For Our Secular Friends For our secular friends we hope that our Christianity helps us to be full of integrity, understanding and love. It helps us to encourage teamwork, honesty, self-sacrifice and pride in the group and its accomplishment. We encourage pride in ourselves, too, but not to the exclusion of others.
Code of Conduct We
don't want to be bossy, but because of the closeness of the working
relationships and the emotional nature of performance art, we've
established a Code of Conduct
for participation in all HAP activities, so that all involved may
freely focus on developing a deeper relationship with the Lord and
growing in our artistry. Read the Code of Conduct
