A Note to Parents

The story of Oliver! by Charles Dickens has some mature elements, some of which are also in the musical play.  Any suggestive behavior and lyrics will be adapted in our production to be more modest and conservative (some numbers may be stricken); yet they will still retain a classic literary feel.  The character of Nancy does get murdered by Bill Sykes.  We will handle this short moment in the play very delicately, and the act of murder will not be portrayed directly, but indirectly.  A police officer also kills Bill Sykes as he is trying to escape.  Again we will handle this moment with care.

We at the HAP believe there are always consequences of sin, and we make a point of showing this in our productions.  We never sugar-coat sin or sinful acts. If they are displayed, they are shown along with their negative consequences.  If you have seen the movie, Oliver!, you will recognize that the ending of our production is very different.  Lynn Moody has adapted the ending of Oliver! so that it ends in a new, exciting way that is both redemptive and uplifting.

We look forward to working with your children.  Thank you.

Calling all Ladies, Young and Old

We are adding a whole bunch of girl orphans (as girls) to the orphan chorus.  Their chaperone will be the character, Bet, whose part has been expanded somewhat.  So if you want to be in wonderful numbers like "Pick a Pocket or Two", "Consider Yourself", "Food, Glorious Food" and others, audition!

There are also numerous female roles for older students, including a chorus of townsfolk with some wonderful solos in "Who will Buy".  This is a wonderful play for males and females alike!

Class Fees

Class Fee $85 and is due the first or second week of rehearsal when scripts are handed out.  Your student will not receive a script unless class fees have been paid, a payment schedule has been set up, or a scholarship has been applied for.  See Scholarship information and/or apply here:  HAP Scholarships  With the fee of $85 parent volunteer hours during the production are required.  If you are unable to volunteer, you may opt to pay the higher class fee of $170.

Submit a Conflict Calendar by Call-back Auditions

New this year is the Conflict Calendar. Each person who auditions must indicate any conflicts they may have with the rehearsal schedule BEFORE CASTING is completed. Mrs. Moody will take into account how many rehearsals you can attend during casting.  This helps us make sure you have time to handle the role you are offered.

A Note to Students

Plan ahead and talk to your family about clearing some things off of the schedule.  This is a large commitment for your whole family, but the personal and eternal pay-offs are IMMENSE.  You'll all be joining the HAP's theatre "family" for a few months and will reap the rewards of participating in the art of quality theatre, immersion in classic literature, th study of Biblical themes, hard work, prayer support and wholesome friendships.  Let's all commit to do our best for a rewarding production all the way around.  You'll be glad you gave it your all.

SYNOPSIS OF OLIVER!

SETTING: London, 1850.

The curtain opens with Oliver Twist working at an orphanage. The boys sing "Food, glorious food" as they wait for supper. They are all hungry after their one cup of gruel and Oliver asks for more.

Synopsis

Mr. and Mrs. Bumble sing"Oliver!", and Oliver is a "Boy for sale" after being upset by his impudence. Oliver is bought by Mr. Sowerberry, the undertaker. Saved from one enemy in Mr. Bumble, Oliver's new enemy is Noah Claypole. A fight between them leads to Oliver being locked up as he sings the tender "Where is love". Oliver runs away where he soon meets the Artful Dodger who sings "Consider yourself ". He is introduced to Fagin and his boys and is taught that "You've got to pick a pocket or two".

Fagin sneaks out late in the evening to meet Bill Sikes at The Three Cripples. Despite the obvious drawbacks of living in the slum, Nancy assures us that "It's a fine life". The following morning Nancy and Bet arrives and Oliver gets to know them during the song "I'd do anything", after which Fagin sends the boys out on the streets hoping that they'll "Be back soon". Well, they aren't, at least not Oliver. He's been arrested for looking guilty when Dodger stole a wallet.

But Oliver is a lucky kid; he's proved innocent and the old man who got robbed, Mr. Brownlow, takes him home with him. In the morning the whole street joins Oliver in the question of "Who will buy". But plans are being made for Oliver's reunion with his old friends. Sikes efficiently persuades Nancy to help him with the task, rending Nancy singing "As long as he needs me". Fagin is "Reviewing the situation", thinking about changing his way of life. Nancy shortly realises that Oliver's life is in danger as long as he stays with the thieves and she contacts Mr. Brownlow, who in the meantime has found out that Oliver is the son of his long lost niece.

She promises she'll take Oliver to him, and she almost succeeds, diverting Sikes attention with the little ditty "Oom- pah- pah". When Sikes figures out what's going on, he kills Nancy. In desperation he takes Oliver with him, trying to escape over the roofs, but is killed himself by a police officer.

Fagin and the Dodger review the situation once again and decide that together they might be able to retire respectable. Oliver finally finds his real family.
